The ignition system in your car transform electric power from the battery to ignite the engine. The battery delivers a high voltage current to the ignition switch and then transferred to the spark plug. The sparks ignite the mixture of air and fuel in the combustion chambers which start the engine.

After thousands of times of using the switch during the vehicle life-cycle, the ignition becomes a primary bottlenecks. symptom of a bad ignition, transponder keys and ECU are very common and can also mask as other malfunctions.

The most common symptom is when the the engine will not start or the car will not crank. The first thing to understand whether you have a mechanical or an electrical problem:

  1. If you have lights on the dash, you are experiencing a problem with a mechanical component.
  2. If there is no cranking at all and no lights on the dashboard, you most likely have an electric problem.

If you are facing a mechanical problem, you most likely need a car locksmith. An expert ignition locksmith with the proper diagnostic tools will be able to repair over replace the switch if needed.

Push to start ignition problems

If your car comes with a push to start ignition, you probably have an electronic problem. This is a job for an car electrician.

Hard to turn the key

If the key is hard to turn in the ignition, the main suspects are a a decaying key or the ignition switch itself. Before calling a locksmith, check and eliminate the following 3 problems:

  1. Shift lock - Some automatic transmission vehicles lock the ignition when the gear is either in neutral or park. Push the break pedal and try to slightly shake the shifter to slide into the right position.
  2. Battery lock - For some higher end vehicles with complex electronic ignition, if the battery is empty, the key won’t turn. Check your battery life and try a jumpstart if needed.
  3. Steering lock - Sometimes when removing the key from the ignition, the steering wheel might get stuck. You can try to gently jiggle the steering wheel and the key to release it, but don't apply to much force and break the key.

After eliminating the above 3 problems, we will check the key:

  1. Wrong key - Sometimes it's just a simple mistake of putting the wrong key into the cylinder. Many keys look similar, especially if they are from the same car maker.

  2. Worn out key - Is common on older vehicles before the use of laser cut keys. If the grooves of the key worn-out, it might makes the pins inside of the cylinder to align incorrectly and get stuck. The solution is using the VIN to make a new key to avoid copying the flaw grooves from the old key into the new one. Contact your dealer or a locksmith to get a new key made.

  3. Bent key - If your key is visibly bent, you can use a hammer to gently flatten the key back to it original shape. Then try to start the vehicle again.

The last option is a problem with the ignition cylinder itself. Below are the 2 most frequent problems related to the ignition lock:

  1. Stuck spring - The pins and springs inside the cylinder tailored to the specific grooves of your key. A broken or damaged spring or pin might interfere with the turning of the key. Call a car locksmith or tow your vehicle to the dealership.

  2. Obstruction - A bound foreign object jam the keyhole and reject the key from entering or turning. You can try to spray compressed air into the ignition to clean dust or dirt particles. If a larger object is stuck inside the ignition, you will need the help of an experience locksmith. Key removal is a risky job and requires the right lock picking and key extraction tools.

Dashboard bad key lights

Modern vehicle's have a built-in immobilizer systems which control the electronic power. The engine gets power and start only if a match transponder key used establishing an anti-theft technology.

The bad key warning light turns on if the immobilizer does not recognize the key or if the key is low on battery.

Generally, the bad key indicator behave similarly between different vehicles maker. For specific information on yours, always refer to your owner’s manual.

When driver turn the key in the ignition, the key shape light on the dash will illuminate for a few seconds showing that the LED it's operational. If the ECU doesn’t recognize the key code, the bad key light will flash multiple times.

Bad key on Push start ignition

Make sure that the keyless entry device is in proximity to the car's computer.

Low battery power on the key

On some vehicles the remote part of the key uses a battery. The bad key light might be programmed to go's on when the battery power is low. Vehicles that use this system have a backup procedure to manually start the car.

Try a spare key

If you have an extra key, try to use it to start the vehicle. This will indicate that the problem is most likely with the key.

Extracting broken keys

Our ignition key removal expert face a broken ignition key often. When this happens, the lock is unusable until the broken piece extracted which makes it an emergency service.

This is again a risky job that easily ends up with greater damage, so we suggest using a locksmith. A locksmith can also duplicate another key on-site in case it is your last one.

If you want to try and remove it yourself, try using the following steps:

  1. Turn off engine and set the gear on neutral/park.
  2. Spray some lubricate into the key-hole with WD40 or any other lock lubricant.
  3. Use a paper clip/needle head pliers/jigsaw blade/thin wire a key extractor tool.
  4. Slide the tool of your choice beside the broken piece of the key.
  5. Lightly try to turn your pick tool toward the teeth of the broken key to pull it out.
  6. Jiggle and pull the broken key until a small part comes out of the cylinder and use the needle head pliers to pull it out.

Car's computer reprogramming

An immobilized vehicle contains a flash programmable engine control module which hold the key-data.

Just like any other computer, the ECU might experience malfunctions during it's lifetime. A "check engine" light will blink on the dash as an alarm for ignition, stalling or performance issues.

To solve the problem, a solution a locksmith can use is to reprogram, re-flash or replace the ECU. This job done by the dealer or by a locksmith, since it requires specific programming tools.
